Baseball Intelligence Factor – How To Develop Skill At The Smart Side Of The Game

Every professional baseball player I have seen has talent. They have the ability to consistently reproduce their skills on the playing field, no matter if it is their ability to run fast, throw hard, hit with power, pitch like a pitching machine or to throw a certain pitch at any point in the count. These skills are the skills that most players strive to excel at every single day at practice. They are the most sought after aspects of a player’s skill set and what scouts typically evaluate when looking at a player. While these skills are important, there are a certain group of players who possess these skills and also have and develop one additional skill - the ability to think during the baseball game and increase your baseball IQ.

Most baseball players have the chance to work on their physical skills every day during the baseball season. They get to take batting practice with a baseball pitching machine in batting cages until their arms are tired of swinging and throw bullpen sessions, most of them work out even harder in the off season at very specific skills. They also have all day to do it because of the money that players earn to play the game. There is an abundance of specific talent development for all players and it should make you wonder why some players excel and why others just barely get to be in the league for any length of time. The answer is that the players who get to actually make it far in the game of baseball play with their baseball minds as much as their baseball talent. That is the difference between just playing the game and playing the game at a super high level - your mind.

You can list many players who do have overall terrific skill. I think of players like A-Rod, Ken Griffey Jr, Josh Beckett and Josh Hamilton. They are players who were born to play in the major leagues and they have worked hard to hone their skills to continue to play there - they deserve it. The vast majority of players do not possess skills such as the players listed above. They do not hit lots of home runs or pitch with power. Instead, they constantly have to get a feel for pitching in order to be able to do things other pitchers cannot do - like throwing multiple pitches for strikes and not being afraid to throw a 3-2 change-up. Hitters need to learn how to know when to go from first to third without the use of a coach or to be able to play great defense at multiple positions. These are some of the things that players do to make themselves invaluable on a team. They are things that every player can do to improve their game.

Much like being aggressive, having great physical tools, being intelligent, having great character and being versatile are important for players to become truly great. Having a great baseball IQ can be the difference between being a great player and being a good one. Physical skills can be improved through hard work. Learning the game takes time, patience and a lot of learning the subtleties of the game to be able to advance your baseball IQ. Work hard, play hard and learn the game. It will pay you great rewards in the long run.

Ten Great Ideas For Why Coaches Should Own A Batting Cage

(Read this like David Letterman's Top Ten List!)

1) With Baseball Pitching Machines, the parents will not have sore elbows and backs when they go to sleep at night – need I say more! I have had this problem the last couple of years and the pitching machine has been a wonderful and welcome piece of equipment to my family and my team. Last year my elbow did not feel right until Mid-September!

2) Swing all the way through a batting practice – give each player more than 100 swings each and every baseball practice. Since batting is the most fun part of the game, the kids will love having you as the coach. My kids all look forward to batting practice – the first 3 to arrive get to use the machine as the first group in the hitting drills – they all get there early and always on-time for practice.

3) When you own a Baseball Pitching Machine, the players can work on bunting until they get it right. Dedicate an entire station to bunting during practice by setting up a pitching machine and having the players practice suicide, sacrifice and drag bunting techniques. How many games do you watch where a bunt is needed and the play is not executed correctly? With a pitching machine and practice, bunt plays will rarely be an issue for your team.

4) Hitting Technique – get it right. Rather than trying to work on just making contact withthe ball, spend time learning to hit the baseball the right way. Teams with limited access to pitches (through the coach’s arms) are thrilled when they get their players to simply hit the ball. Our team gets time to actually work on the proper batting mechanics – our strikeouts are down to 1-2 per game against the some of the best pitchers in the league.

5) The pitching machine gives us the at-batsrequired to learn to hit balls to the opposite field. We also get to work on hitting balls where they are pitched and trying to have the players hit sacrifice fly balls to the outfield when runners are on second or third base.

6) We use the Heater Pitching Machine , Tru Toss Soft Machine and the Grand Slam Wiffle Ball Pitching Machine at different intervals at each practice. Our team gets lots of swings and the coaches get to coach rather than pitch and try to dodge the hit balls coming rocketing back at them.

7) Curve Balls - Our team is learning to hit curve balls and our kids have the chance to see about 20 of them every practice session. A coach and his arm could not throw that many curve balls without having a very stiff arm for the next several days.
8) Intra Squad Scrimmages - We use the hitting machine to play intra-squad scrimmages. The game just moves faster and the quickpace keeps everyone engaged and having fun.

9) The Baseball Hitting Cages are safe enough for the kids to use without having an adult to watch over them every step of the way. A little common sense is all that is needed to be sure the kids can have fun while you enjoy watching them improve.

10)Your home] will become the central place for the whole warm months our backyard is the hangout place for everyone. We get to serve cold drinks while the kid splay home run derby, hit to countless pitches and then go home tired out after a great night of hitting baseballs. I think if I were a kid I would be hanging out right where they are as well.

To Your Hitting Success,

Coach Chuck

Coach Chuck Stewart operates a baseball web site called www.BaseballSkillAids.com offering baseball training aids and coaching/instructional videos along with lots of free coaching content. Being Better At Sports With Your Mind

All athletes realize the importance of mind techniques. Golfers may know this best. As Tiger Woods said, "I see every shot before I hit the ball." Jack Nicklaus said, "Golf is a game of inches and the most important 7 are between your ears."

I have had the opportunity to work with professional football players, golfers, high school athletes, college swimmers, basketball players, soccer and baseball stars, skiers, gymnasts and weekend warriors in all types of sports to improve their game. Sports and hypnosis / mind techniques go hand in hand and the most successful athletes practice the mind of sport routinely.

There are many ways to learn Hypnosis. Conversational hypnosis is one of the best ways and easiest to learn. You can obtain more information about it here - Learn Conversational Hypnosis . It is very important that you stay away from charlatans. You should learn Hypnosis from someone who is a real expert at it. One such recommended guy is Igor Ledochowski. Igor has himself been associated with martial arts for long time and is very popular in his field. He has been recommended by top names in are of hypnosis. You can read more about him here -Igor Ledochowski Hypnosis.

Tests with Olympic athletes proved that whether an athlete imagined their event or actually physically performed the event, the same muscles fired off in the same sequence. Once you have practiced over and over in you mind with hypnosis, when the time comes to perform athletically, it's second nature and automatic.

As an athlete, you should be aware of the the power of hypnosis. And you know the power of imagination:
if the human mind is capable of imagining something, it's capable of making it happen. So imagine . . .
Imagine finding the energy to push yourself to new levels of performance.
Imagine training harder than you've ever trained before.
Imagine finding yourself effortlessly breaking the performance plateaus that you've been struggling to conquer . . . and then ascending to new heights.
Imagine staying cool and calm under pressure as the timer runs down.
Imagine scoring the goal . . . making the shot . . . bounding past the finish line . . . finding and overcoming new challenges.
Imagine discovering the resources you need within yourself to excel at your sport.

If you are really serious about winning in sports you should definitely learn more about mind techniques and hypnosis in general.

Increasing Vertical Leap With These Simple Tips

Here are some simple exercises and tips for increasing your vertical leap. It is NOT a complete program for athletes. Even those athletes who need great jumping ability will have to engage in conditioning, sport specific skill training, speed training and even other exercises in the weight room.

These tips help you to increase your vertical jump, but if you are an athlete, don't fall into the trap of believing that this program is the only one you need! Instead, look for other programs that will be specifically designed for your sport. TheVerticalProject is one of the best programs out there for increasing vertical leap. If you are looking for a good review of this program. Then you can follow the following link - TheVerticalProject. Those programs will also improve your vertical jump, but will also give you the tools you need to achieve athletic excellence! The developer of this program is Luke Lowrey. He has made quite a name for him in this area. There are a lot of people who regard him as a guru in this field. More information about him here - Luke Lowrey.

Some simple useful exercises to improve jumping:

Mini hops: jump a little off the ground, over and over without hopping. Jump rope for its excellent cardiovascular conditioning. This step should never be skipped, as it will be an important contributor to your results.

Squats - these help to stretch and strengthen at the same time.

Calf raises - these are a major work out. They don't seem too hard, but if done thoroughly, they can make you unable to walk for a hour or two.

Walk or run on tip toes for 20 minutes, then backwards for 3 minutes.

Stand in 1 spot on tip toes for 2 minutes.

Start stretching at least 3 times a day, working mostly on the hamstrings, quads, hip-flexors and glutes and calves.

Sprint. This builds muscle, which will add to your jumping ability.

Some other useful tips are:

Begin every workout by warming up your muscles and then doing extensive leg stretches. Because you'll be building muscle fibers that are used for explosive activities such as jumping, stretching is of the utmost importance.

Rest your legs at least two days a week. Results will come from sustaining the exercise program, not performing it aggressively for a few weeks and then slacking off. Muscles require atleast 48 hours of rest to rebuild broken down muscle fibers after long workouts. You'll notice that your calf muscles will get bigger on the days that you rest! Without proper rest, muscles will become immune to your physical routine, and may not increase in mass or strength.

All About How To Throw A Baseball

Throwing is the single most important physical skill in baseball. If a player can’t throw a baseball accurately and with enough force to reach the intended target then he better be able to hit the ball out of the park on command. And since these players aren’t very common, baseball throwing skill becomes of the utmost importance for success on the diamond.

When teaching throwing to young baseball players, most coaches start with the grip. As a position player (non-pitcher) it is recommended that young players learn how to throw a baseball with a four-seam grip. Throwing with this grip is advantageous because the ball tends to stay truer in flight and carry longer than with other baseball grips.

As players get older they should be using the index and middle fingers as pressure points on the ball, but as younger players, or those with smaller hands, adding the ring finger to the top of the ball is acceptable for control and balance. The ring and pinky fingers should rest on the side of the ball in a flexed position. As players get older and their baseball throwing skills mature they should use a close, or narrow, two-finger grip across the wide seams making sure that the finger pads–not the tips–are in contact with the seam of the baseball. This grip will promote tighter spin of the baseball when released thus promoting accuracy and carry.

A common mistake players make as they get older is to get the index and middle fingers spread too far apart on the ball. This may help control in the short term but will hamper spin and velocity. A proper distance between the two fingers should be no more than ¼ of an inch apart.

The thumb should be placed directly underneath the index and middle finger on the opposite side of the ball. This may feel uncomfortable at first for younger players and older players with smaller hands. In this case, the thumb can be slightly to the side of the ball for better balance in the hand but emphasis should always be placed on slowly and gradually moving the thumb to a position more underneath the ball. Again, this position helps with spin and velocity in the baseball throw.

Care should be taken not to position the ball too deep in the hand. The index and middle fingers and the thumb should be the primary supports for the baseball. This may not always be possible for younger and smaller players, but should be taught regardless so that they are aware of the proper technique as they physically mature and are capable of doing it right.

Always remember that throwing a baseball is a skill. And like any skill, it can be developed and improved with quality repetition and practice. Games and friendly competitions that involve throwing always add the fun factor to the equation and we all know that we learn better when we are having fun. Have young players throw baseballs at targets or have them throw for distance to help them improve the most important skill in baseball.

Baseball Glove - Breaking it In

How to Break in a Baseball Glove

Baseball gloves are available in almost every size, color and material known to man. Traditional gloves are made from leather or faux-leather and more recently from buffalo and kangaroo hides. No matter what the material, baseball gloves need to be broken in. Players find that by using various methods to break the glove in, they will get a better fit and therefore play a better game.

Different players will certainly have different methods and ways to show you how to break in a baseball glove. You can expect that for each method, another will be said to work better. Methods for breaking in a baseball glove can be viewed as a personal preference and will need to be tweaked for the individual. To summarize, there are two basic goals in breaking in a glove: to soften the glove and to create a pocket. The best method for breaking in a glove, however, is simply to use it as much as possible.

You can use a multitude of methods to soften the leather. If you want to learn how to break in a baseball glove, this is the best way to start. You can use shaving cream, petroleum jelly, saddle soap or a leather softener made for baseball gloves. Most baseball glove manufacturers offer a leather softener for their products. These usually work very well but some players have their own tried-and-true methods. Experts suggest that you be very conservative in your use of creams or jellies; more is certainly not better in the case of softening leather.

The best method by far for creating a pocket is simply using the glove. The more wear and play time your glove has seen, a better pocket will form. There are, however, other methods to speed up this process and make your glove more comfortable quicker. The most popular method in creating a pocket is to put a baseball inside the glove and then tie it up with string. You can even find products that will help the baseball glove stay closed to form the pocket. By using this method, along with a lot of playing, you will find that a pocket has formed inside the glove before you know it.
