Pitching Machines – Common Sense Will Keep A Player Safe

As a coach it is our responsibility to teach sports safety. Many experts say it is the number one responsibility of any good coach or parent. Players need to learn to practice good safety in every sport. The great sport of baseball is no different. Baseball and softball is among the most popular sport in the United States. In the United States there are over 6 million kids from the ages under 14 playing organized baseball and softball. There are over 15 million playing on non organized teams. In 2005 there were an estimate of 175,000 kids treated in hospital emergency rooms for baseball and softball related injuries.

Baseball pitching machines are very simple and easy to operate. The key is to use them properly. I have been to many of practices and watch untrained coaches and players use equipment and get hurt. Here are 5 easy ways to prevent getting hurt when operating a pitching machine.

1. Adult supervision is a mustwhile at the batting cages. There is something to be said about good adult supervision. We as adults are supposed to be more mature and smarter. We can all remember what it was like to be young. When we were kids we thought we were invincible. Coaches and parents look for hidden dangers. Make sure the player is aware of possible dangers. It is always better to be safe than sorry.

2. Protective gear such as batting helmets. Batting helmets are a mandatory product to help prevent or. Chin straps are good to keep a secure fit. Face guards have shown to prevent facial injuries.

3. Dry baseballs are also a key for a pitching machine. Balls will absorb moisture from many sources and become dangerous. Look out for bad pitches. Make sure that the pitching machine and baseballs are dry before use. Keep mind that a good solution is pitching machine baseballs. They are designed not to absorb moisture. The pitching machine baseballs will give a batter a great pitch every time.

4. Common sense will take players a long way. Keep a player focused. Teach the player on what to do if there is a wild pitch. Teach the player how to move properly out of the way of a wild pitch.

5. Have a plan. Act quickly if an injury occurs. Have a properly stocked first aid kit and always have a cell phone close by in case of an emergency.

I have been to a pregame and witness this happen. I was watching an away game and a young athlete was getting loose in a batting cage, not paying attention and he got hit in the face high on his cheekbone. I know that it could have been prevented if only proper precautions would have been taken. No matter what the age of the athlete is, stay out of the hospital emergency room and stay on the baseball field. Always pitch safety first.

Popular Gifts For A Sports Fanatic

It always seems like there is a birthday coming soon for a relative or a friend. If the birthday is for a sports fan then most probably, sports collectibles comes to mind. Its easier than you think to shop for a sports enthusiast, even if you do not know anything about sports. Furthermore, for the most part, they are sold everywhere and are not expensive as, for example, there are many types of affordable sports memorabilia items available in the market.

Firstly, find out what sport the person the gift is intended for for is a fan of. But do not just stop there. Lets say the person is a huge NBA fan. That does not mean that you can just purchase NBA merchandise from any team in the NBA. For example buying a Chicago Bulls fan a Detroit Pistons basketball team merchandise may be considered sacrilegious to a Chicago Bulls faithful. So pay a little attention to this part of the plan.

Suffice to say, after finding out what sport he is a fan of, you need to dig a little deeper and find out which team he supports. Do a search on the net for stores selling sports memorabilia of that particular team. If you decide to get him a jersey, please take note that most fans would have at least one jersey of the team they support. But there are at least three types of jersey - home jerseys, away jerseys and training jerseys. So getting him one which he does not have would certainly put a smile on his face.

It is quite possible to take the jersey gift a level further by getting one with his favorite player's name and team number proudly printed on it. It is even possible to customize it more by having the birthday boy's very own name and favorite number displayed on the jersey.

The most valued gift, arguably, is an autographed gift. NHL hockey jerseys with the signature of a player or every player on the team on it would send any fan into ecstasy. Sadly, such items are not only rare but cost quite a few doubloons as well. Gifts like these are commonly kept in an enclosed glass or acrylic display casing, safe from oily hands with potentially value degrading chemicals.

But the simple truth still remains that any sports fan would be overwhelmingly to receive a gift, be it mini NFL helmets, with their team's emblem on it to add to their popular sports merchandise collection.

Scoring Tries Is One Of The Most Common Ways To Score Points In Rugby

Watching rugby makes much more sense and becomes far more enjoyable when you can follow the rugby scoring system. Once interpreted it is quite simple to follow and once you understand the points value for each activity you will find the game more exciting.

There are a few basic ways to put points on the rugby scoreboard. They are the drop goal (also known as field goal or drop kick), penalty goal, try, penalty try and conversion.

Penalty Tries

The conversion and the penalty goal require a specialist kicker to place the ball and kick it between the vertical goal posts and over the crossbar of the goal posts. The kicker may select between using a kicking tee, pile of sand or sawdust to kick the ball from. He steps back and then runs up to the ball before kicking between the posts.

A field goal is different to a conversion in that the player drops the ball from his hands and attempts to kick the ball over the crossbar and between the vertical goal posts during the run of play. It is a specialist skill, and field goals are rare - they take precise timing and lots of practice to master.

A referee can grant a penalty try if he believes the defending team deliberately fouled the attacking team in an attempt to prevent them completing a move that would have resulted in a try being scored. The official phrase is 'beyond reasonable doubt'.

To indicate this the referee runs to a central point beneath the crossbar of the goalposts, raises his arm and blows his whistle. The attacking team gets the chance of a conversion kick with the chance to add points to the score.

Converted Tries

Scoring a try is the best way to rack up score in rugby. A try is recorded when the attacking team crosses the defending teams goal-line and puts the ball on the ground in their in-goal area. Once a try is scored the referee raises his arm and blows his whistle. Both the try and the penalty try are valued at five points each.

When a try is scored the referee stands at the point where the try was scored and points in a line back up the pitch parallel to the sidelines. The goal kicker can take the conversion attempt at any point along that line.

Usually the goal kicker takes the conversion attempt somewhere he/she feels comfortable around 20 - 30 metres from the goalposts. Kicking a conversion adds 2 points to the try scoring side. When a team successfully kicks a penalty goal they are awarded 3 points.

When a team is making a conversion attempt, the defending team must stand on or behind the goal-line. As the kicker gets ready to take the conversion, the players are allowed to rush the kicker as he starts his run at the ball.

The sum for a converted try is a total of 7 points (5 for the try and 2 for the conversion).

Rugby Points

For any team to get to the top there is a requirement for an outstanding goal kicker to be in their team. Goal kickers are immensely valuable as there are many indiscretions in the play of an average rugby game.

One of these indiscretions being made in a teams defensive area of the game gives a chance for their opponents to score precious points against them. A kicker who can successfully kick a goal from any area of the field immediately puts incredible pressure on the opposing team.

A top class goal kicker in your team, with a specialist field goal kicker or two, definitely makes a great basis for any team to get their best rugby score. It also puts pressure on any team they play.

Have Fun With The Sport Of Running Without Injury

Running is a healthy and fun way for many to get in shape. So why are so many people scared of it? It is good for the heart, great for the core, and cleansing to the mind. Oh and did I mention you don’t need any special equipment? A pair of sneakers and comfortable shorts is all you need.

Regardless, with the basics and simple methods there are many folks who will sit at home, on the sofa wearing their reading glasses and a bathrobe talking bad about the benefits of running. The main complaints are boredom and injury. While boredom can easily be combated by a change of scenery, such as a scenic trail rather than a high school track of injury is overlooked.

Injury from running usually comes from one of two areas. The first is poor form and the second is overuse. These injuries can happen in any sport. There is so much research and science behind great running form now, that if someone feels they are suffering from a form related injury, help should be easy to find.

There are great programs, books, and clinics available nationwide to help understand and improve ones form. For example, keep you stride length short and increase your rate of turnover. Over striding is a major cause of knee pain because it results in a heel strike landing. Which, in turn, sends a shock up the runner’s leg, which is absorbed by the knee. A few months of this at a number of miles a week and it is no wonder a knee hurts so much.

you could be big or small, this has nothing do to with your overall size, the main factor is to focus on short strides and mid foot landing and with a faster foot turnover that will keep the pressure off the knees and redistribute it to the structurally sound skeletal body. That is one example of how good form can help to decrease a very common sports related injury.

That was a form related injury, another common one is an over-use injury. This occurs when someone goes out too strong and too long. I suffered from an over-use injury myself. I will never forget the doctor applying pressure behind my knee. After a a few moments, he glanced at me through his magnetic reading glasses and told me I should take a a couple weeks off from running, stretch a lot, swim, and then get back out there. In the end he was right. I just went out too hard and fast early in my training.

A lot of people want to be their own hero and will jump right in to a fast or long training schedule. The fact of the matter is that anybody can run a marathon if they put in the proper training and consistency. However it takes time. If you have never run before or have not run recently start with a shorter training schedule. There is a lot to be said for the ever popular couch to 5k program. Start slow, there is no rush. And if you start to fast, you might find yourself back on the couch before you know it.

Running is a fun and healthy way to get in shape, as long as you focus on good form and don not over do it.

Pitching Machine Baseballs - The Right Choice When Using A Pitching Machine

The controversy surrounding what type of pitching machine ball to use when taking batting practice has been around for years. Coated baseballs, also called pitching machine balls or dimple balls, are often thought of in a adverse manner with the argument that they do not provide the same feel as a real baseball when struck by the bat. In my opinion the balls used in pitching machines are superior for their durability, longevity, cost benefit and the fact that they do not scuff and pick up moisture like real baseballs so the flight from the machine is much truer leading to better pitches and more steady swings during batting practice. This article describes these points in great detail.

Color - When hitting in the batting cage the color of the pitching machine ball becomes very important. As you work to train your hitting eye a yellow ball is easier to pick up than a white ball. The yellow color is designed to give you the best overall visibilityin several different lighting conditions.

Durability - It is important to keep in mind the durability of a baseball. A standard baseball is made for game use. A ball that is used a lot will pick up moisture, scuffs and wear out very quickly. The design of a batting cage baseball. with a shell made of plastic, will last much longer. You should expect the pitching machine baseball to last at least 2 to 3 years. That is a lot hits, long drives, and home runs. The design of the pitching machine ball adds to its durability. Because of their plastic outer coating, pitching machine balls are designed to not attract moisture. A traditional baseball will absorb wetness from many sources. It can come from either a wet or damp field, overnight rain or even the summertime humidity. Over time, the regular baseball begins to add weight from the moisture and can become very heavy. If a wet or heavy ball is used in a pitching machine the pitches can become unpredictable. When that happens the act of taking batting practice can actually become dangerous. A lot of wild pitches are sure to follow. Take comfort in knowing that you will get a consistent pitch every time with the use if regular pitching machine baseballs.

Like New Quality - The high quality of the pitching machine ball makes the balls very easy to clean. You don't have to worry about getting them wet. A coach or player can easily clean the pitching machine baseballs with just mild soap and water. I have had good luck simply wiping them dry after each use. This simple task, much like a golfer wipes their clubs clean after each use, helps to keep the color bright and the balls in great shape to last to their full life expectancy of 2-3 years.

Lower Cost - While the initial cost of a set of balls for batting cages may be slightly higher than regular baseballs, the long-term cost of pitching machine baseballs are lower. As the cost of baseball equipment rises, a standard baseball is no exception. The cost of a box of 24 balls will be about $60. With non stop training you will probably need to replace the balls about twice a year. The best solution is to switch to pitching machine baseballs. The cost with the pitching machine baseballs is very close to the same as regular baseballs, with the cost of the pitching machine balls being about $72 for 24 balls. The real savings comes from the fact that the pitching machine balls should last about 2 - 3 years.

It does not take a hitters eye to see that the right choice is to use pitching machine baseballs with your pitching machine. If you are preparing for the upcoming baseball season or if you are in mid-season form getting ready for the play off run, fire up the pitching machine, it is time to Play Ball!

Just Where Did The World Game Come From?

Its a game with several names : football (most of the world), soccer (US and Australia), the beautiful game (Pele) and increasingly known as 'The World Game'. But whatever you call it there is also a lot of debate as to where the world game was invented. Lets have a closer look.

Was it invented in China?

There are many accounts from Ancient China of early forms of soccer. It is impossible to know who invented the game in China, but there are accounts of something very similar being played in China in as early as 2 BC. This early form of the game involved kicking a leather ball into a net. A similar game is known to have been played in ancient Japan, as well as being played by Native Americans. Many argue that these early forms of soccer, though, are not what influenced the game we play today as they did not spread from their home country.

What about Europe?

Much like China and Japan, early forms of soccer were played in Europe also. Again, it is impossible to pinpoint any individuals. Soccer was played during the Middle Ages, with neighboring villages playing games against each other. These soccer games looked a lot like the type of games we see now in playgrounds, with uncounted players on each team, and an 'anything goes approach' to the rules and what to use as a ball. The players worked together to move the ball towards a landmark, rather than a goal, but was starting to show signs of the game we play today.

The Individuals Who Played a Role

An Eton student during the 16th century called Richard Mulcaster did a lot of writing on the sport. Many believe that it is these writings that set up the organized rules of the game. A schoolmaster called J.C. Thring also had a hand in the evolution of the game, and helped to set up rules at the school where he worked. These rules, called the Uppingham Rules, standardized the game (each school had been playing with its own rules), and Thring is believed to be one of the individuals who invented modern the world game.
